MYANMAR (BURMA)...Burma became an independent democratic nation in 1948 but in 1962 following a coup it became a military dictatorship that only recently ended in 2011. The Republic of the Union of Myanmar or Myanmar is still struggling with their political history and low human development. BUT this Theravada Buddhist country has been known by many names Amarapura, the Land of Immortality, and Yadanarbon, the Land of the Gems and, today, it is known as Suvanabhomi, the Golden Land. These titles are such a true reflection of the land. A century ago, Rudyard Kipling described Burma as a place “quite unlike any land you know about.” That holds true today, it is a very magical destination.
